Bread-making tip: Store whole-wheat flour in refrigerator to keep it from becoming rancid
Place the following ingredients in a large bowl (ceramic or plastic, not metal.)
1 cup wrist-temperature water
1 tablespoon honey
1 ½ teaspoons active dry yeast
Dissolve yeast in water with honey. Let stand 5 minutes.
2 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon salt
¾ cup whole-wheat flour
Add honey, salt and flour to yeast mixture.
Mix enthusiastically with wooden spoon until well-combined.
- Turn out on floured surface and add white flour, a bit at a time (up to 2 ¼ cups is o.k.).
- Knead for 10 minutes.
- Oil mixing bowl, place dough in it, lightly oil top surface of dough.
- Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1 ½ hours.
- Punch dough down and knead again for a few minutes.
- Pre-heat oven to 350º
- Divide dough into 6 equal parts, and form each part into smooth, round ball.
- Using a floured board, roll each ball to ¼” thickness with rolling pin and place on
- ungreased cookie sheet. Cut sign of cross into dough with knife.
- Bake 15-20 minutes, or until bread browns up nicely.
- When breads are cooled, place them in zip-lock freezer bags.
- Bread can be frozen.
Bring bread to Guild Room Kitchen freezer and
place in round containers marked
“Altar Bread.”

BREAD MACHINE ALTAR BREAD RECIPE
Bread-making tip: Store whole-wheat flour in refrigerator to keep it from becoming rancid.
Makes six 4” loaves.
Place ingredients in your bread machine in the following order:
1 cup wrist-temperature water
1 teaspoon lemon juice
2 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon salt
¾ cup whole wheat flour
2 ¼ cups white flour
- Form “well” in flour and place 1 ½ teaspoons active dry yeast in it.
- Set bread machine on “dough” function.
- When dough is complete take out of bread machine. Punch dough down, and knead again for a few minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350º
- Divide dough into 6 equal parts, and form each part into a smooth, round ball.
- Using a floured board, roll each ball to ¼” thickness with rolling pin and place on ungreased cookie sheet.
Cut sign of cross into dough with knife.
- Bake 15-20 minutes, or until bread browns up nicely.
When breads are cooled, place them in zip-lock freezer bags.
Bread can be frozen.
